Merry Christmas

Home time!

After leaving the house on October 26th we finally returned home. Let's be plain...it was just too damn long. Next time we will try 6 weeks and see how that goes! So to all you drivers still on the road for Christmas, drive safely. To all you at home and to everyone else...Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Welcome to warm weather!

Okay, so it hasn't been a bad winter (knock on wood). But here's the thing it's hard not to like the 60's in the south. That's why we're going back to North Carolina. In 5 or 6 months we'll hate it down here because it's too hot! You can just never make some people happy!  Santa arrives in 11 days!!!!!!! Hope it snows! LOL

Kentucky humor

You just gotta love the Florance KY water tower! Just south of Cincinnati you can see it from both ways..haven't seen another like it yet! On our way to North Carolina and have beautiful snow fall in the Appalachian Mountains but alas its dark and no photos to share. While I don't find the idea of driving the truck in the snow very appealing, there is nothing....I mean absolutely nothing like fresh snow clinging to everything in sight ....absolutely beautiful!

Lovely weather we're having!

Snow in Iowa and now they are calling for snow and rain mix through to Decatur Illinois. Dennis and I are visiting Caterpillar, we just hope we don't get stuck there. We knew the snow would come sooner or later but we were hoping for later! Today is the kind of day you just want to curl up on the couch with a good book but we gotta work if we want to be home to meet up with Santa! Happy Saturday!

Little delay on this blog post, sorry about that!

Accident...not us!

I saw the most horrid accident on I-30 going into Dallas at three am this morning. I will spare all the gruesome details but it involved two semi trucks one car and near as I can figure three horses. It was the single most gruesome thing I've ever seen. If I were 60 seconds further it would have been me. One horse looked physically ok but scared witless.  Safe travels all.....

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well we didn't make it home for the holiday, we wanted to save it for Christmas. So we spent two days at the Hampton Inn in a two bedroom suite, full kitchen, jacuzzi tub and had spaghetti for dinner! Not to worry, the next day I did make the most important part of dinner....pumpkin pie! Yummmmm! Back to work now and on or way west ....we're determined to stay warm! Plus I just love the southern hopsitality!

Weekend in Nashville

Been running hard these last two weeks and we both need a break. Walmart, oil change, paperwork....then I will hop online and see whats around...if anything interesting we will see.  I only know 60 degrees in Nashville is better than 30 in Minneapolis! It really is amazing how fast you become wimpy!

How big is nowhere?

Pretty big! We passed more cars driving one mile in New York City than 774 miles through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota! I'd say there are more cows than cars! Beautiful countryside.

Snow!

Well we knew it would happen sooner or later....ran into a little storm south of Buffalo Wyoming at 4:30 am. So like a smart person I pulled off the highway and took a nap then let my husband drive! Good morning Wyoming!

Diversity

Here's the thing that amazes me.....one person lives their whole life next to a cotton field, the other a corn field. There are those who never drive a car, because the city streets offer them everything they need. Some are friendly (like the bunch in Oklahoma yesterday), some just dont care. Others are raised on the prarie, and some raised in the majestic Sierra Nevada or Continental Divide.

There is a whole world to see, to enjoy. There is beauty, and ugliness.

The thing I remember the most is the kindness, and it doesn't matter what color it is or if it speaks with an accent. It makes you feel good, and it makes you feel even better to give it back.

You don't necessarily remember a tree, or a road, you remember the people you meet.

Woke up!

Watched the sun go down in Kansas and woke up to the Rocky Mountains......pretty awsome! There's snow in them there hills too!

Yes Dorothy we're in Kansas!

What a beautiful sunset driving west last night! The cows, who were sticking their heads through the fence, wanted me to let everyone know that.....Yes, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence! It was hysterical!

Camping in North Carolina

After our trip through New York City we needed fresh air and an absence of sky scrapers! We found a couple of very nice campgrounds in the northeast corner of N. Carolina. The first was Rocky Hock Campgrounds that had a private pond (no fishing license required and Friday night Jamboree's at Dave's Barn). They have all hookups, showers, and laundry. The next night we stayed at Trail's End Campground. Very nice area, shower facilities and full hook ups. Both welcome expediting trucks/vans please see links page for website info. It was a wonderful change from truck stops (which there aren't any of in the northeast corner of the state). Thanks for the hospitality! I got to pick cotton right from the field and Lulu gave me some Sweet Sorghum which I'm anxious to try out on a hot biscuit!

Time Square

Have you ever wanted to join rush hour traffic from New Jersey to Time Square on a Friday morning?  The drive wasn't so bad but try making the delivery parked right on Broadway and Time Square! People..people..everywhere! Like Crocodile Dundee said....they sure mist be a friendly bunch to live together like this!

Poor Tigers....

Here we are....Michiganians delivering Texas Ranger apparel to Dicks Sporting Goods! Bad karma......

Gotta love Texas!

First there was Toe Jam Trucking......now we have funny repairmen!

My friends the cows....

These are still the best billboards in the county! Although I saw a billboard with a real live waterfall in Dallas that was pretty cool!

Enjoying Saturday!

Kitty says....goooo Blue!

Rachel Ray would be proud!

No bake oatmeal cookies made in the sleeper of a 40' straight truck! You can do anything if you set your mind to it! Not sure how they taste yet but they do look good!
(All while watching South Carolina vs Mississippi on the 17")...life's good!

Here's the list so far!

These are in no particular order and I hope I spell them correctly! I've been to the following states in my two short months as a truck driver.....

Alabama (Great state! Go Bama! Roll Tide!)
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Connecticut (Friendly Drivers!)
Delaware
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana (Another great state!)
Maryland (Would like to see it in the daytime!)
Massachusetts
Michigan
Mississippi (Gotta love the south!)
Missouri
Nebraska
Nevada
New Hampshire (very nice people!)
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York (absolutely beautiful)
North Carolina
Ohio
Pennsylvania
South Carolina (Love those Cherry Cokes!)
Tennessee (Dennis wants to live there)
Texas
Utah
Virginia (Beautiful State)
West Virginia (This one too!)
Wisconsin
Wyoming (want to spend more time here!)
and Washington DC if you count them!

Here's my picks....At heart I am definately a Northeast kinda girl!  The Appalachian Mountain Range is my favorite with the Blue Ridge Mountains topping the list. Now being a northern girl I dislike the heat but I love the south! Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama get my vote (Go Bama!). They take football serious down there so be careful what you tie to your purse (depending on the state!) I thought I would miss the colors changing in Michigan, and I do, but I get to see the entire country change colors, what could be better?

I still have 12 states to go (not counting Alaska and Hawaii), so the verdict about the best place is still out!

Charlotte SC - Flying J

Store # 714 in Rock Hill SC deserves a spot in my blog. Truck stops are nasty places because peope are generally pigs! I've often told Dennis that I have a hard time understanding why a truck stop would put out a garbage can and then leave it to overflow with garbage. While truckers are a large part to blame, the truck stops are too....but not Rock Hill.  The staff is fast, efficient and I even saw the Manager sweeping the parking lot! The employees of that truck stop actually work and very hard! If you are ever in the Charlotte area it's an excellent place to stay!

Cows

These are some of the funniest billboards on our highways! Haven't eaten there yet but their billboard are hysterical!

Traveling Around

Im finally get to learn how to do this. (Dennis) As we travel we take alot of pictures through our droid boinic phone. It takes good pictures. But at night its a pain. So we were going to Alabama. So a called up a ole army buddy. We got together for a few hours.  It was great. Talking about the good days and about desert storm. Alot of memories resurfaced. Then we sat for couple of days. Played some modern warfare on xbox 360. With my nephew in nevada and friends at home. Got load offer to Tennessee. Seen a sign for the Jack Daniels plant. 2 people first came to mind my brother Doug and brother in law Justin. Made delivery so we are sitting at pilot at Lebanon. Tennessee . Waiting. Waiting and Waiting ...lol.

Across country

I have to say if there is one place I would like to spend more time its the state of Wyoming. I'm not sure what I find so different from the mountains in Wyoming and the mountains in Nevada but besides visiting Yellowstone (one of my top 10) I would like to explore that beautiful state some more!

Wearing a plant

Looking out at fields of cotton it struck me a litte funny that we eat what comes from the garden but we wear cotton!!!!!!

The Mississippi

The Great River touches 10 states and I've already been to 9...the muddy waters feed rivers like the Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Arkansas and about a half dozen others. Its the largest river system in North America. Its amazing to think how much of this country was built because of this river system!

Funny!

You see the funniest things!  Course it all depends on your sense of humor! LOL

Weigh stations

Interesting area I've never noticed before. Oh, well, I've seen them, but never had to drive through them before. It seems to me that if I have to drive through they should make their expectations clear. Do I stop? Keep moving? Use right or left lane? This communication shouldnt happen in the very last second! And really if the weigh station is open could ALL the signs leading to the station say they're open and not the very last one? And while I'm at it....this Prepass thing....is it just me or does everyone have a hard time seeing the little red and green light during the day? Aaannnnd we are the United States...why dont all states have Prepass? And why don’t all truck drivers have it in cab instead of complaining of having to pull over at each station? Really I understand the need and have no problem complying but does it have to be so confusing?

The big D!

My first trip to Texas was hot and dry. However, if you ask a Texan they'll tell you it felt like fall at 90 some degrees! Dallas area was impressive I must admit...but then its very new! Of course as you can see its very cow friendly!

Saturday, September 3, 2011

In the south, specifically South Carolina, they have a tree/shrub called Lagerstroemia or Crape myrtle. They have various colors but the pink ones are spectacular, even in late August. The other thing South Carolina has are very cool fountain beverages.  When you go for your 44oz. Coke they have cherry syrup dispensers right there and viola` you have a most excellent cherry coke! Very yummy!

I'm a maniac!

The Hudson River ...the last peaceful sight before navigating the streets of New York City. I gotta tell ya, those New Yorkers don't have a thing over Chicagoans! But picture for a moment.....me...behind the wheel of a big ass truck going over the George Washington Bridge. Ha! Comin' through!!!!!!!!

Oddities in Olean

In Olean New York there are 25, four foot tall fiberglass squirrels. You can check out the squirrel pages on the city's website (see our links page) for Nutty O'St. Nick, Florence Squirrelingale, RN and more

...this is Ronald McSquirrel.....

Who knew?

When you think of New York you think of the city...at least I do. Who knew the state of New York was so beautiful?! I apopogize for my short sightedness! I have fallen in love with the green rolling hills of the Liberty State (sorry) Empire State and who knew they grew grapes on the northern border of New York and Pennsylvania? The people of Massachusetts and New Hampshire are very nice and extremely curteous. I definately look forward to exploring the northeast a lot more!

A gift from a friend....bobblehead Jesus.....what truck would be complete without one? Amen! LOL Yeah it worked! I can post pics now!!!!!!!

Super secret delivery!

We dropped off a load this morning that was tracked from pick up to drop off and we had to spend the night at a safe haven so the load remained secure. While it didn't seem like a big deal to us there are a lot of things out there that are important to other people! We're off to Cleveland this afternoon!

Busy!

Been busy this first week! Runs from Michigan to the Carolina's back up to Illinois and Iowa then back to Michigan. Got to ride through Trenton, the old homestead. Not much changed but its a lot more industrialized. No real down time yet, taking advantage of making money, fun will have to wait! Will post pics as soon as I figure out how to do it from my phone! On the road again.......

Success!

We have completed our first run as husband and wife team! I won't say anything about the fact that I took graveyard shift my first time out, or drove through the foggy mountains, passed through my first toll gates (they really need to make those wider), got stopped at my first weight station or went through my first mountain tunnels all while my busband was asleep! But never fear he does back seat driving just fine from the sleeper!

Greensboro NC is very pretty and hot! I can't wait to see where we go next!

Wating on a load!

Had a great send off yesterday from my friends at work, good food, laughs and tears. I will miss them but look forward to getting our first load. I'm all approved and "in the truck" so it's just a matter of time before something comes in and the big wheels are rolling! Thanks again...Love you guys!

On another note... we set expectations for ourselves and we move forward to make the expectations a reality. We have a picture in our mind of how things will be, but it's funny how reality has a way of being nothing like our expectations! So instead of going insane we adapt and we learn to go with the flow (of course some of us are better at this than others).  We need patients and we need to learn appreciation for the things that are, not get caught up in the regrets of how we wish things were. (HA! When did I become so...philosophical?)

Think Small

Have you ever tried to take your entire life and fit it into a space that was 96" x 102"? It's about the size of a 8 foot square box....and I'm talking about everything from the kitchen sink to the bathroom. It comes down to what you need and what you want and it's surprisingly easy. Ask anyone who enjoys hiking, when you have to carry all you need and want on your back, you really need very little and want even less.

For instance, what am I going to do without my entire bathroom shelf of hair products? I spent good money on these products, real good money (your welcome Redken).  Or what about the other shelf that's full of makeup, moisturizers, cleansers, blushes and eye shadows (you're welcome too MaryKay)?

The answer is,  a few of these things will travel with me, I mean a girl can still drive a truck and look good doing it! But most of it will stay behind, after all we do have a weight limits we have to be mindful of and I don't think the owner would be appreciative if we could only have two pallets of material on the truck when the rest of the room was taken up by my stuff!

I am sure my husband will be appreciative of this post, girl talk on an expediters blog is just not manly, but it makes you think. What do you really need in life?

I am a professional driver!!

Yes! You see, when you hang at the truck stop, the lady occasionally comes across the intercom and says, "Professional Driver ...blah...blah...blah". That's me! A professional driver! (lol)  I've got to wonder what my father or my grandparents would say, I believe they would be as surprised as I am about our choices, but as everyday goes by I get more excited!

We spend our lives driving down the same roads, going to the same places and seeing the same people day after day. We live our lives in such a small fragment of the world (and happily so) that I am eager to see more of it! Crape` diem...and all that stuff.

Taking that driving test was one of the worst experiences I've ever had! I can't even express how happy I am that all the testing is over, at least for the next three years! As a bonus there's not a scratch on the truck...well maybe from a branch or two, or three.

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go...I'm standing here outside your door........

Test Day!

Tomorrow is test day....I just know I'm gonna fail! Everything is falling into place, truck is fixed and paperwork is being processed. Imagine...me...a truck driver..LOL

Studying

So I've been studying my hazmat and my pre-trip and I really can't wait until this is all over with. I have to learn to drive by the 13th which is when I take my test....so stay off the roads for the next week!  At least until I pass.

Preparation

OK, so the truck is beautiful and has all the comforts of home, but just like a house it needs to be cleaned. While my home isn't spotless by any means this truck is a mess! However, once we get the grunge cleaned and make it our own, we honestly couldn't ask for a better truck. It even has a bathroom! Seriously!

So while I learn to drive it (may I add I was awsome in my first attempts to back up!) we'll clean, prepare, pack and anticipate our departure......
